World Cooking Day

There are many foreign postdoctoral researchers (PD) from 13 countries at TTI. At this event, a PD from China showed us how to make dumplings. Our host also shared his insights into Chinese cultures and languages, which made the experience even more interesting. The participants were very interested in learning about another culture.

Spring Excursion

We had an excursion to Ohdaka. We took a working tour around the town and a tour guide explained to us the historical aspects of the town.

Christmas Party

Students ordered beverages in English, played new games and quizzes explained in English. They also enjoyed a surprise 'Santa Claus' and flute performance, both played by students. Participants prepared Christmas exchanged presents at the end of the party.

Candle Night

Student volunteers of iPlaza participated in the Christmas lighting ceremony. Candles made from recycled oil from student's dining hall were placed in the shape of two seed leaves. One leaf has letter S in it and another has E, which represents the capital letter of "Smart Energy". It is the symbol designed by students for "Research Center for Smart Energy Technology" established this November. We invited neighboring children to this event and served hot chocolate.

Speech Contest

The Fourth Speech Contest was held TED style. Twelve participants gave a talk on the free speech section and the research presentation section. Students not only used PowerPoint, but also other devices. The first prize winner of the free speech section was Junya Ueda, "How the 'birdman' changed the world", first prize of research presentation section was Takeshi Oonishi, "World sense disambiguation-ambiguity in language-".

TTI and NIT held a Scientific English Vocabulary Contest.

Excursion to Magome & Soba making

What a perfect day to be out! We visited Magome in Gifu and walked through the historical route which was used to be connect Tokyo with Kyoto during Edo Period. The participants also tried Soba Making for the first time and they loved it. Watching the beautiful color leaves was so impressive.

Halloween Party

The event was held for the participants to experience Halloween. The students explained in English about Halloween and showed the participants how to carve giant pumpkins called Jack-O-Lanterns. Everyone participated with unique costumes and enjoyed the party.

Report Meeting for Study English Abroad Program for Master's Course

Nine master's course students visited TTI-C and the University of Akron (USA), University of Bourgogne (France), Imperial College London (United Kingdom), Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands), Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (Korea) and National Dong Hwa University (Taiwan). They reported their research and experiences in English.

October1-4 ・Report Meeting for English Study Abroad Program for Graduate Students. Twenty-five students and office staff participated in a four week English workshop at Portland State University. Students shared their experiences in English.

School Festival

During the school festival, iPlaza was open and visitors enjoyed talking with our foreign teachers. Also, TTI English teachers gave a presentation about the experience of study abroad.

Summer Seminar

The Summer Seminar was held at TTI in collaboration with our partner institutes, National Chung Hsing University(Taiwan), Hannam University(Korea) and Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology(Thailand). The theme for this program was "Smart Community". In this seminar, we asked the students, who are all living in Asia, to think about what they could do to create a smart community using their research at university. We also wanted the students to think what kind of technology the world needs. There were lectures, experiments, field trips and discussions that fit the theme of the program during the summer seminar .

Japanese Tea Ceremony

The purpose of this event was to introduce Japanese culture to the foreign nationals at TTI. TTI students explained in English how to drink tea in a traditional way followed by the Tea Master. The idea of the tea gathering was learned. This was also a great opportunity for the students to learn about their own culture.

Japanese Pottery Experience

As a cultural experience, participants went to Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum and learned about Japanese pottery making, including the Hand Wheel technique. The participants struggled at first, but all seemed to be happy with their results.

English Night

The purpose of English Night was to recreate the experience of a bar/cafe in the U.S., Canada, England, etc. The participants learned useful words and phrases in English when they ordered food and drink from a bartender. They even learned the custom of tipping. Aside from the bar, we prepared several board games. Some students worked as dealers and explained the game rules in English to the participants.
